Watson W. Powell Jr.

Watson Powell was a long time resident of Des Moines and
for many years he was the Chief Executive Officer of
American Republic Insurance Co.
He was a
member of Capital Lodge #110 and received the Scottish
Rite Degrees in 1947. He was made a Knight Commander of
the Court of Honour in 1971.
Brother Powell was a distinguished community leader having
served as the head of the Chamber of Commerce, was
inducted into the Iowa Insurance Hall of Fame and the
Central Iowa Business Hall of Achievement. He received the
President’s Award from the Des Moines branch of the NAACP
in 1989 and the Governor’s Award for Business in the Arts
as well as the Des Moines Human Rights Commission Award in
1969.
What was formerly Keo Way from 7th street to second avenue
in Des Moines has been renamed Watson Powell Jr. Way in
his honor. As a business neighbor of our Scottish Rite
Center, we enjoyed the use of their company parking lot on
weekends for many years.

Bro.
Otto was born in Grundy Center, IA and grew up in Colfax.
After service in the Army Air Corps during World War II,
he moved to Des Moines in 1945. He was an engineer with
the Westinghouse Corp and then Iowa Power & Light Co,
retiring in 1983 He was active in many engineering
societies and state & local community groups.
Bro. Tennant was raised to the degree of a Master Mason in
Auburn Lodge #592 in 1946. In 1993 he became a member of
Waveland Park Lodge #654, serving as Worshipful Master in
1998. He received his District Lecturer’s certificate from
the Grand Lodge of Iowa in 2000 at the age of 82 years.
He became of member of the Scottish Rite in the Des Moines
Valley in 1950. He was invested Knight Commander Court of
Honour in 1975 and was coroneted 33rd Degree Honorary in
1989. During his Scottish Rite membership he worked in the
17th, 30th & 32nd degrees. He was appointed Asst. Personal
Representative to the Advisory Conference in 1989, serving
until 1998.
He was active in other Masonic Bodies including York Rite,
National Sojourners, High-Twelve International, Za-Ga-Zig
Shrine, & Order of the Eastern Star. He served on the
Board of Scottish Rite Park from 1974 to 1993, including
several years as an officer and committee chairman. He
also actively served the Boy Scouts of America. |
